My work is a reaction to the past, the present and refers to the future consequences of man’s relentless destruction of nature. Bent twisted dying trees and fauna symbolises humankind’s disregard and disengagement with feminine values and the voice of nature. Mankind's actions of exploitation and abuse of the natural world are echoed in my work. The power and force of nature and its ability to reemerge, regenerate and rebirth is an ever hopeful dream. There is anxiety in the world and my work is increasingly reflecting this angst. My art shows the darker consequences of this destruction but also an optimistic presence balancing the pessimism that humankind can live harmoniously with nature. The Mother and Mother Nature symbolism feature heavily across all my artwork relating to this theme of hope, power, gentleness and rebirth. Will mankind achieve redemption in time?
I use a variety of media to explore these ideas. In ceramics, I use techniques called Sgraffito and Mishima which allow me to draw into the clay and add colour. I am very interested in how marks can express forms. My printwork also uses a technique called Intaglio - a similar technique of scratching a design and then wiping back the ink to leave line and inked areas to describe shape. I’m currently exploring how this way of mark making can be applied to painting.
